What it does

“Behavioral guidelines to reduce common LLM coding mistakes. Use when writing, reviewing, or refactoring code to avoid overcomplication, make surgical changes, surface assumptions, and define verifiable success criteria.”
The author's description, from SKILL.md

Generated summary from the skill's own text

This skill provides behavioral guidelines to reduce common LLM coding mistakes when writing, reviewing, or refactoring code. It emphasizes thinking before coding, prioritizing simplicity, making surgical edits, and defining verifiable success criteria. The guidelines help agents avoid overcomplication, surface assumptions and tradeoffs, and maintain focus on what was actually requested.

When to use it

  • Writing new code modules or features from requirements
  • Reviewing or refactoring existing code for clarity
  • Making targeted bug fixes with test verification
  • Editing code while preserving unrelated functionality

When not to

  • Rapid prototyping where speed is the priority
  • Building systems intentionally designed for extensibility
  • Working on codebases already following different standards

Install

These commands install from the publisher's repository and need no account.

skills CLI

npx skills add youdotcom-oss/agent-skills --skill karpathy-guidelines

Installs from the repository's default branch, which may have changed since the commit we checked.

GitHub CLI 2.90 or later

gh skill install youdotcom-oss/agent-skills karpathy-guidelines@9bc61f556646770da3085c048f35db9547343c44

Installs the commit we checked (9bc61f5).

Copy by hand

Download the folder at 9bc61f5 and put it in .claude/skills/karpathy-guidelines for Claude Code and in .agents/skills/karpathy-guidelines for Codex, Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode.

Skill folder on GitHub at 9bc61f5

Claude Code plugin

/plugin install youdotcom-agent-skills@claude-plugins-official

The publisher's plugin in Claude's official marketplace. It may hold more than this skill, and we have not pinned it.

Copy for your agent

A prompt for any coding agent. It installs this skill from GitHub at the pinned commit, copies the files as they are, and runs nothing unless you ask.

Prompt

Install the agent skill "karpathy-guidelines" by You.com.

1. Download that folder at exactly this commit. Do not use the default branch.
2. Copy every file unchanged, keeping the folder structure, into .claude/skills/karpathy-guidelines/ for Claude Code and .agents/skills/karpathy-guidelines/ for Codex, Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode. Create the folders if they do not exist.
3. Do not edit the files, and do not run any script in the folder unless I ask you to.
4. When you are done, list the files you copied and where you put them.

# Karpathy Guidelines

Behavioral guidelines to reduce common LLM coding mistakes, derived from [Andrej Karpathy's observations](https://x.com/karpathy/status/2015883857489522876) on LLM coding pitfalls.

**Tradeoff:** These guidelines bias toward caution over speed. For trivial tasks, use judgment.

## 1. Think Before Coding

**Don't assume. Don't hide confusion. Surface tradeoffs.**

Before implementing:
- State your assumptions explicitly. If uncertain, ask.
- If multiple interpretations exist, present them - don't pick silently.
- If a simpler approach exists, say so. Push back when warranted.
- If something is unclear, stop. Name what's confusing. Ask.

## 2. Simplicity First

**Minimum code that solves the problem. Nothing speculative.**

- No features beyond what was asked.
- No abstractions for single-use code.
- No "flexibility" or "configurability" that wasn't requested.
- No error handling for impossible scenarios.
- If you write 200 lines and it could be 50, rewrite it.

Ask yourself: "Would a senior engineer say this is overcomplicated?" If yes, simplify.

## 3. Surgical Changes

**Touch only what you must. Clean up only your own mess.**

When editing existing code:
- Don't "improve" adjacent code, comments, or formatting.
- Don't refactor things that aren't broken.
- Match existing style, even if you'd do it differently.
- If you notice unrelated dead code, mention it - don't delete it.

When your changes create orphans:
- Remove imports/variables/functions that YOUR changes made unused.
- Don't remove pre-existing dead code unless asked.

The test: Every changed line should trace directly to the user's request.

## 4. Goal-Driven Execution

**Define success criteria. Loop until verified.**

Transform tasks into verifiable goals:
- "Add validation" → "Write tests for invalid inputs, then make them pass"
- "Fix the bug" → "Write a test that reproduces it, then make it pass"
- "Refactor X" → "Ensure tests pass before and after"

For multi-step tasks, state a brief plan:
```
1. [Step] → verify: [check]
2. [Step] → verify: [check]
3. [Step] → verify: [check]
```

Strong success criteria let you loop independently. Weak criteria ("make it work") require constant clarification.
