What it does

“Detect the upstream vllm tag (v1) that the current branch is based on. Ensures the upstream remote is configured, fetches tags, and finds the nearest upstream tag reachable from the fork point. Use when you need to identify the upstream base version of the current branch, or when another skill needs v1 detection.”
The author's description, from SKILL.md

Generated summary from the skill's own text

This skill identifies the upstream vLLM tag that a forked branch is based on by configuring the upstream remote, fetching tags, and finding the nearest tagged version from the fork point. It presents the detected tag to the user for confirmation before returning the upstream base version.

When to use it

  • Determining which upstream vLLM release a feature branch originated from
  • Validating compatibility when another skill requires upstream version information
  • Identifying the base tag for comparing changes between fork and upstream

When not to

  • Working with non-vLLM repositories or forks without upstream remotes
  • When exact commit history is less important than current branch state

Install

These commands install from the publisher's repository and need no account.

skills CLI

1. Download that folder at exactly this commit. Do not use the default branch.
2. Copy every file unchanged, keeping the folder structure, into .claude/skills/detect-upstream-base/ for Claude Code and .agents/skills/detect-upstream-base/ for Codex, Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenCode. Create the folders if they do not exist.
3. Do not edit the files, and do not run any script in the folder unless I ask you to.
4. When you are done, list the files you copied and where you put them.

# Detect Upstream Base Tag

Determine which upstream vllm tag the current branch is forked from.

## Usage

### Step 1: Ensure upstream remote

```bash
if ! git remote get-url upstream &>/dev/null; then
  git remote add upstream git@github.com:vllm-project/vllm.git
fi
git fetch upstream --tags
```

### Step 2: Detect v1

```bash
V1_BASE=$(git merge-base HEAD upstream/main)
V1=$(git describe --tags --abbrev=0 --match="v*" "$V1_BASE" 2>/dev/null)
```

If `git describe` fails (no reachable tag), fall back to the merge-base SHA:
```bash
V1=${V1:-$V1_BASE}
```

### Step 3: Confirm with user

Present to user: "The current upstream base tag appears to be **$V1**. Is
this correct, or would you like to specify a different tag?"

Wait for explicit confirmation before returning the value.

## Output

The confirmed value of `V1` (an upstream tag like `v0.19.1` or a commit SHA).
